The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has announced the immediate ban on sale, importation, manufacture of Sniper and other brands of agricultural formulations of Dichlorvos in Nigeria.
These agriculrural formulations of Dicholorvos are produced mainly for pest control, but has now been abused and used for suicide.
According to The Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Moji Adeyeye, she said from September 1, 2019, Sniper and other related products would not be sold in supermarkets and in the open markets.
“The sale of Sniper insecticide and other Dichlorvos brands in open markets and supermarkets nationwide is prohibited with effect from September 1, 2019. NAFDAC is giving a six-month moratorium up to January 1, 2020 for brand owners to exhaust the products that are in various accredited agro-input dealers (distributors/marketers/retailers) outlets.”
Adeyeye also lamented that these products have in recent times become the tool of choice in committing suicide as in the recent incidence of the corps member who used sniper to wash her hair in other to eliminate lice and died 10days to her birthday.
