Luxembourg hasn’t been seen competing at Eurovision since 1993, but with this year’s Eurovision being hosted in the Benelux region, fans were of high hopes that the Duchy would make an appearance.Alas, RTL has affirmed that Luxembourg won’t be competing at Eurovision 2020.
The broadcaster openly confirmed their non-participation to ESCToday. An RTL spokesperson explained that the broadcaster’s focus is on news rather than music and entertainment shows. Also, taking part in Eurovision would be a “financial burden on the broadcaster”.
But not withstanding the broadcaster’s lack of interest, Luxembourg has a thriving Eurovision fan base who still hope that one day their country will return to compete in Eurovision.
Luxembourg debuted at the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956, alongside fellow founding members – France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands and Belgium. Despite five wins in the 60s, 70s & 80s, the nation last participated in 1993, represented by Modern Times with the song “Donne-moi une chance”.
