Two days after turning heads on the purple carpet of the Met Gala in a shimmering Versace robe, full with a spiked headpiece that made her appear like an precise angel, and three days earlier than Mom’s Day, Blake Vigorous landed at The Wing Dumbo to host a charity occasion for Baby2Baby, the philanthropy began by Kelly Sawyer Patricof and Norah Weinstein that gives low-income kids with fundamental wants like diapers and clothes.
“I used to be seeing from afar what Baby2Baby was doing, and I heard a This American Life story a few lady who after Hurricane Katrina was displaced,” explains Vigorous of how she turned concerned with the group. “Before, the woman was upper-middle class; she had a Mercedes; she thought that her life was solid. She didn’t have savings, but she was doing all right in her situation, and then Katrina happened and she was displaced and moved to Texas, and she didn’t have any support, and she had a young baby and a toddler, and was suddenly begging. She had to keep the same diaper on her baby. Hearing this woman’s story stuck with me.” That was six or seven years in the past, and in looking for a charity that may have an actual affect on households in want, Vigorous got here throughout Baby2Baby and signed on to be an envoy. She has since lent her identify and time to occasions that it hosts.
This specific Mom’s Day celebration introduced mothers and children that Baby2Baby serves in New York to the ladies’s membership for a day with Mickey Mouse, the Disney Princess Tiana, and reside music by Little Maestros. There have been flowerpot-making stations, a card craft space, a lot of snacks, and far, rather more. The enjoyable wasn’t only for children, although. Whereas the kids had been dancing away, the mothers bought to partake in a second of me-time, with blowouts supplied by Glamsquad and manicures by Tenoverten.
“All the kids here are living below the poverty line, so to be able to have an event where not only they get to celebrate but the moms also get to have a minute of peace [is really wonderful],” Vigorous notes. “They’re not given the opportunity that they should be given.”
The actress has two daughters, ages three and 1, of her personal and is attempting to instill in them a way of gratefulness from an early age. “I always want to make sure they’re present and they’re appreciative,” she says. “In order to be appreciative for what you have, you have to realize that it isn’t a given. We talk about how we’re very lucky—and even though we work hard, we need to be thankful we’re given the opportunity to work hard because a lot of people work hard but aren’t given this opportunity. I don’t know if I’m doing it right, I’m sure I’ll take plenty of missteps, but I think it’s about being aware and being present.”
And with that, Vigorous’s children certain in to affix the social gathering. As quickly as she sees them, the actress jumps up in her bubblegum pink Jenny Packham fit-and-flare gown and festive Lucite earrings to offer them bear hugs. “I think that if I weren’t doing what I’m doing for a living, there’s nothing I’d love more than going to kids’ parties and dressing up and making them happy. Maybe I just secretly want to dress up as a Disney Princess. [Actually,] maybe it’s not so secret!”
